Here is how it works...

The first port of call will be for you to book an appointment with us to choose what you and your partner would like your wedding bands to look like.

You will be shown a wide range of choices, and we can help you narrow down the perfect band for you, choosing carefully the band shape, design, width and ring size.

Once we know the style and size of the rings we can estimate the weight of the finished rings, ensuring you have enough metal to work with, and we can then provide an accurate all in quotation and provide any further information that may be pertinent.

We can also use this appointment to discuss any additional embellishments you may want on your rings, from diamonds set into the bands to engravings, or specific finishes.

The rings will usually take between 2-4 weeks to be made, hallmarked and ready for collection, but we can be flexible on timings if you are working to a tight deadline.

See how the process of a Melt and Make works below:

Melt your metal

Our goldsmith will firstly unset any unwanted stones from the jewellery (which will be returned to you if not being re-used in your new rings), and remove any excess solder from older rings, ensuring the metal is a pure as possible. The metal will then be smelted down to liquid form. For platinum, due to the extremely high melting temperature this will be heated to over 1700 degrees Celsius! It will then be carefully poured into a steel mould to cool.

Roll out your metal

The goldsmith will then proceed to roll out the metal bar into the required shape. The process involved using a mill and slowly rolling the metal smaller and smaller until it is the desired width and depth. In between rolls the metal will be annealed to reduce the work hardened nature and ensure it remains sold without any microscopic cracks.

Shape your rings

Continuing to work on your band, the goldsmiths will both shape the metal bar into a 'ring' shape, as well a soften or shape the inside and outside to produce the desired profile and depth. The two ends of the band will be joined and either laser welded, or soldered together, choosing the correct method depending on the type of metal and weight of band.

Polish your ring

Once your ring has been crafted into the correct style, width and size, your ring will be buffed using a range of fine sandpapers removing any surface imperfections or undulations, prior to being polished using at least 5 grades of polish, from course to super fine, making them beautiful and sparkly!

Hallmark your rings

Once complete we will send your bands to the London Assay Office to get them assessed and stamped with the iconic Daniel Christopher Jewellery hallmark. This is a very important process, and the assaying of jewellery is a legal requirement in the UK. The stamps all differ, and will denote what metal your band is, where it was assayed, the date it was stamped, and the Daniel Christopher hallmark.

You will be able to collect your rings the day after, and take them home with you to enjoy!
